TESO (Texels Eigen Stoomboot Onderneming) has formed the lifeline between Texel and the mainland for more than a century. Each year, the organization transports over 2 million passengers and 900,000 cars between Den Helder and the island.

Tailor made on Azure

TESO’s back office is not a standard application: the system communicates with barriers, cash register systems and license plate recognition and must run flawlessly for sixteen hours a day. Developing and maintaining such a solution requires custom work. This is why TESO chose Betabit as a specialist in business-critical software in Azure, explains Eric Blaauw, IT manager at TESO.

The collaboration began with a business sprint: all requirements were captured in a blueprint. This formed the foundation for a new system that had to remain stable, even during the transition. Because the ferries must keep running.

The transition went flawlessly, despite the move from an on premise to an Azure environment. Only the vital processes such as access gates and cash register systems still run locally so that they are never offline.

The result is a modern, stable and secure system that gives TESO room to grow in the years ahead. And the collaboration continues.

The system runs stably, but is never finished. Betabit continuously thinks along about the next phase so this solution will last at least another fifteen years. Together, we keep building the future.
